Meet the author behind the scenes, how did it all begin?
Hello, my name is Gemma Keir, I am 34 years old and I am mummy to Logan, Caleb, and Savannah-Rose. As an accomplished author and the founder of The Abilities In Me, I have now self-published 28 children's picture books, working alongside Adam Walker-Parker, Bear With Us Productions, Yevheniia Lisovaya for Illustration and Claire Bunyan and Emma Lusty, my editing team. The books have now sold worldwide (still going!) with profits benefiting The Abilities In Me Foundation. My work aims to raise awareness and support inclusion through various means including inclusive workshops, school visits, and writing, which spans both poems and books. I have a passion for educating awareness. When I first started my publishing journey, I was turned down from many publishers who believed books like these would not sell. Just 5 years in, I went on to sell over 90,000 copies worldwide. The Abilities In Me Foundation, gets all royalties paid in. I want our future generation to grow with compassion, kindness and understanding that being different, is truly a beautiful thing!
I am a children’s book author with dyslexia, dedicated to crafting stories that help kids understand their medical diagnoses and empower them to educate others about their experiences. My picture books are more than just stories; they are tools for creating awareness, inclusion, spreading kindness and compassion.
Through vibrant illustrations and sensitive storytelling, I strive to ensure that each child’s story is told through their own eyes, emphasizing that these are their experiences and adventures, and I am merely a conduit for their voices. Representation matters deeply in my work. I am committed to including diverse characters from various races and with different disabilities, aiming to see them not just in books but also in other children’s media like TV, cartoons, and toys.
I have self-published 28 picture books, with more on the way, each crafted with heartfelt dedication. The response from children, parents, and educators has been overwhelmingly positive, reinforcing the impact and necessity of these books. Children bring these stories to school and feel seen, which is a testament to the importance of representation.
Beyond book writing, I offer a range of writing services, including poetry, card writing, and ghostwriting. I am also enthusiastic about conducting inclusive workshops and am keen on participating in seminars to spread the message further.
Join me in making a difference—one page at a time. Together, we can build a world that embraces every child’s narrative, ensuring that all are seen, heard, and celebrated.
I founded The Abilities In Me Foundation and all my book profits go towards the foundation’s mission!
As a parent to three wonderful children, each with their unique health challenges, I've come to redefine what normal means for our family. Our eldest, Logan, 11, navigates life with 22q deletion syndrome (DiGeorge Syndrome), which brings a spectrum of symptoms including a congenital heart defect requiring open heart surgery, autism, global developmental delays, speech delay, incontinence, and most recently, scoliosis. Caleb, age 9, struggles with asthma and nocturnal involuntary body movements that also lead to incontinence. Our youngest, Savannah, age 3, is managing eczema but is otherwise in good health. Our lives revolve around hospital visits, maintaining cleanliness and health at home, and cherishing every moment we have together. Despite the frequent challenges, we focus on enjoying daily life and embracing our unique normal, especially as Logan has faced increased hospital stays recently.
